Before we really dig into this film, there's a couple of things that need to be said. I enjoyed this movie; it was very heartwarming and filled to the brim with slightly-cheesy but laugh-evoking jokes. However, after watching the trailers, I can honestly say I was expecting a little bit more from this piece. It was rather simplistic in terms of story. Of course that's easy to say after the magnificent animated films that we've seen recently, that packed powerful messages and complex story lines. But all in all, it doesn't require much attention to follow along with this movie. However, the movie is sure to entertain kids, as it is filled to the brim with colourful action and simple humour.
An added factor that contributes to this simplicity is the generic plot. It's a kind we've seen one too many times. An outcast child befriends another outcast species that is not what it seems to be and they both learn the true meaning of family. Feeling a lot of 'Lilo and Stitch' vibes? Yeah, so am I.
In terms of the actual events of the movie? It drags in spots along the way, goofy bits of mischief thrown in to make up for the lack of a solid storyline, however, I have to say, the movie really does pick up around the third act. The ending evoked a pretty big belly laugh from myself, who doesn't usually escape so much as a giggle during comedies. The main message is tied together quite nicely closer to the end, and you leave the theatre feeling satisfied but also with a major headache.
To conclude, if you're a person who enjoys watching animated movies for the deep themes and complex story lines, this movie isn't for you. If you enjoy flat-out ride through a colourful world of goofy characters and fun music, then hop in your cars and head to the movies.
